What is Acupuncture Treatment?
Acupuncture treatment is the ancient art of inserting delicate, sterile needles in precise points on the body to facilitate a healthy energy (qi) balance of mind, body, and spirit. Restoring a healthy balance relieves dis-ease, pain, and even emotional disturbances. Acupuncture has been used to heal and to prevent disease for thousands of years. It is the most popular modality of traditional Chinese medicine. In the last century, medical professionals have added new techniques using acupuncture such as electro-acupuncture, auricular acupuncture, and scalp acupuncture.
What is an Acupuncture Session Like?
At a typical acupuncture clinic, use acupuncture by itself or in combination with other Oriental medicine techniques such as cupping, moxa, acupressure, gua sha, herbs, and essential oils. All of our practitioners have many years of training and an acupuncture license from the Texas Medical board.
Many first-time acupuncture patients are worried about pain. Acupuncture needles are super-fine and much smaller than hypodermic needles used for injections or blood tests. Hollow hypodermic needles used in hospitals have an average diameter of 0.01 inches, which is large compared to those used for acupuncture. Acupuncture needles are not hollow and have an average diameter of 0.00325 inches…about the same as a strand of human hair.
Most often needle insertion is completely painless. Sometimes patients feel pressure or a twinge of momentary pain, but our acupuncturists take every precaution to make the experience pleasant and comfortable. Many patients fall asleep during their acupuncture treatment. As our patient, you are always in control of your treatment and your requests are respected, so if you prefer not to experience our recommended treatment, just let us know.
At Flying Needle, we offer holistic healthcare referral and information service for community acupuncture which can provide a supportive option for situations where family members or people with a common condition are interested in being treated simultaneously. It is not for everyone but can be a more affordable treatment option for some.
Acupuncture Benefits
Because the goal of acupuncture is to restore the balance of a patient’s energy, the benefits are too numerous to list. The variety of applications are diverse including chronic or acute pain, emotional disorders, digestive problems, respiratory issues, neurological challenges, and many other syndromes or dis-ease that humans face.
Studies in the U.S., based in both western and eastern medicine, illustrate that acupuncture can relieve migraine headaches, chronic low back pain, dental pain, fibromyalgia, and symptoms of osteoarthritis. It has been shown to assist in the treatment of emotional pain syndromes such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and resolving chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. There are many conditions that respond positively to acupuncture treatment.
